BMW to Support Better iPhone and iPod Integration
German sports and luxury automobile maker, Bayerische Motoren Werke, recently announced that 2011-model vehicles will support better iPhone/iPod touch integration via the iPod Out feature – one of many new features of the just released iOS4. In a nutshell, it allows your car’s built-in screen (in the case of BMW, the iDrive) to display iPod style menus.
Current level of iPod integration allows full control – but on car manufacturer’s own proprietary interface, which is crude to say the least.
This move will standardize all iPod integration into one familiar, unified interface. Another advantage is that it allows the car to change and grow with the connected iPhone or iPod. If Apple decides to add or modify a feature in the next revision, the connected BMW should immediately be able to reflect those changes.
Got yourself an iPhone 4? Why not get a BMW along with it?
